When I saw Rene Leclerc in September he expressed his disappointment that he no longer had an American importer. What a shame! He has produced two superb wines in 1990 and the remainder of his portfolio is sound. The Gevrey-Chambertin-Lavaux St. Jacques will probably turn out to be an outstanding wine. The highly saturated, opaque, ruby/purple color, the sweet, roasted nut, cassis, smoky nose, and the unctuous, concentrated, chewy, full-bodied, powerful flavors are impressive. This enormous style of Pinot Noir should provide delicious drinking over the next 10-12 years. All of Rene Leclerc's wines are bottled with no filtration.
