The 1994 Pinot Noir Canary Hill Vineyard (200 cases) is disappointing in the company of Ken Wright's other 1994 super-stars, but it is probably not nearly as foursquare as my unenthusiastic notes suggest. It was unfortunate to be sandwiched in a tasting with some tough competitors. The wine reveals a medium ruby color, a straightforward herb and black-cherry-scented nose, medium body, and good ripeness. It does not appear to possess the depth, complexity, or personality of Ken Wright's other offerings. Ken Wright, who was long associated with the fine wines made at McMinnville's Panther Creek, has formed a winery under his own name. The results in 1994 are superb. There are not many Pinot Noir winemakers who can make six separate cuvees, and have five of them nearly outstanding. In fact, this exceptional success rate puts Ken Wright in the company of such Burgundy luminaries as Laurent Ponsot, Lalou Bize-Leroy, Hubert Lignier, J. J. Confuron, and Claude Dugat. Although quantities of the top wines are extremely limited, Wright's sumptuous Pinot Noirs are worth an effort to track down.Kudos to Ken Wright for this marvelous array of Pinot Noirs.Tel.
