Named for a site between the Burgberg and Goldloch (and in reality representing a blend from parcels or lesser lots of each site), the Diel 2007 Riesling trocken Eierfels is redolent of and brimming with ripe honeydew and apricot; conveys inner-mouth floral perfume, chalk, and invigorating, savory salinity into a juicy finish; and should serve over the next 5-7 years as an excellent and more affordable introduction to the style of Diel’s ambitious top-end dry Rieslings. An attractive spicy, woodsy note suggested to me cask maturation, but in fact this impeccably-balanced dry Riesling is rendered entirely in tank.
With the 2007 vintage – one Armin Diel compares with his superbly successful 2004s – daughter Caroline Diel has joined Christoph Friedrich in guiding vineyard and cellar operations here. (The 2008 vintage sees her in the estate’s leading role.)
