The 2009 Pian di Nova (Syrah, Sangiovese) is gorgeous in this vintage. Dark red cherries, flowers, licorice and new leather are some of the many notes that flow from this delineated, well-spoken red. The 2009 impresses for its balance and finessed personality. This is a great showing from Il Borro. The 2009 won’t last forever, but it is delicious right now. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2016.
This is an attractive set of wines from Il Borro, which belongs to the Ferragamo family. I have to say, I am quite curious to see what newly arrived consulting oenologist Stefano Chioccioli will bring to the table with his initial 2011 harvest. A maniacal attention to farming, sorting and an emphasis on creating the blends later in the aging process are likely to have an impact.
