The 1991 Nuits St.-Georges Les Vaucrains (from 45-year old vines) possesses a big, spicy, earthy, licorice, and black-cherry-scented nose, tannic, muscular, powerful flavors, excellent depth, and an austere, backward, youthful finish. It needs 4-5 years of cellaring and should keep for 15. The 1991 releases may turn out to be the most complete Gouges wines in over two decades. Although not exceptional, they display more color, bouquet, richness, and length than any vintage since Gouges' marvelous 1969s. Importer: Vineyard Brands (Robert Haas), Chester, VT.
