The color of Cristom's 1993 Pinot Noir Reserve (600 cases produced) is a trifle more saturated than the regular offering, and the nose offers up more expressive, perfumed scents of red and black fruits intertwined with herb and new oak aromas. The characteristic velvety texture Cristom routinely achieves is present in this seductive, sumptuously ripe, rich wine. Slightly richer extract would have pushed my score up a few notches. This is a beautifully made, elegant, perfumed, intense, supple Pinot Noir that should drink well for 4-5 years. Guzzle this beauty while waiting for the spectacular 1994s.
This winery has been relying on purchased fruit until its own vineyards come into production in 1995. The owner, Paul Gerrie, a Burgundy aficionado, and winemaker, Steve Doerer, made splendid 1994s, but readers will have to wait another year for those wines to hit the marketplace. For drinking now, the 1993s are good wines made in a forward, ripe style.
