The 2000 Barolo Cerequio is one of my all-time favorite wines from Roberto Voerzio. Sadly, I haven’t had the discipline to keep my hands off the bottles, but I am not the least bit sorry, because they have all been breathtaking. The 2000 Cerequio blossoms on the palate with a burst of small red berries, followed by sweet spices, freshly cut roses, mint and eucalyptus. It possesses gorgeous inner perfume and the silkiest of tannins. The 2000 remains remarkably fresh, with just the faintest signs of early tertiary development. This is for me the reference-point wine from the Cerequio vineyard. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2030.
Roberto Voerzio’s 2000s are among the most successful wines of the vintage. That’s not terribly surprising given Voerzio’s virtually unparalleled track record of making profound wines that can age, even in the smallest of vintages. The 2000s are only now beginning to approach their early maturity. These remain beautiful, fresh Baroli that will deliver considerable pleasure for years to come.
