Another classic, focused Cornas is the 2006 Cornas Vin Noir, which comes from three lieu-dits: Champelrose, les Eygats and Combe—all of which are granite terroirs. Aged 14 months in older barrels, it has more depth and richness than the classic cuvee, medium to full-bodied richness, good acidity and classic notes of black currants, scorched earth, olives and hints of gamey meats. This is a gorgeous, fresh and lively Cornas that is just now at the early stages of maturity and has another decade or more of longevity. I think the current releases from this estate has more depth and richness, but this is a beautiful wine.

Not surprisingly, the inky/purple-tinged 2006 Cornas Vin Noir offers up notes of pen ink, graphite, incense, blackberry liqueur, melted licorice, and asphalt. Full-bodied with superb purity, depth and length as well as moderately high tannins and decent acidity, it, too, requires 3-4 years of cellaring, and should last for 15 years.
