Here's a wine that impressed me far beyond my expectations. Congratulations to Sicily and to Planeta for making a wine of this magnitude. Sadly, the winery only has 12 to 15 bottles left in the cellar, so very few of us will have the opportunity to enjoy it. The 2001 Cometa opens to a dark golden color and the appearance of thick glycerine that streams down the side of the glass. It reminds me of an aged Alsace white and even has the distinctive carbon petrol aromas that recall Riesling. You are also treated to lingering tones of tropical fruit, candied banana and pineapple. It delivers a rich and creamy close.
