The 2008 Cometa still show a generous vein of sweetness with plump and ripe fruit aromas that remain integral and bright despite the wine's age. Aromas of tropical fruit, papaya, honey and camomile flower are delivered with rich waves of intensity. Yet, the mouthfeel is thinner compared to the other wines in this retrospective. Its texture is streamlined and tight with dusty mineral tones of brimstone and flint that add a sense of prolonged and polished persistence.

The 2008 Cometa (Fiano) opens with an exotic bouquet of honey, tropical fruit and white truffles. This is a decidedly rich, textured white, yet all of the elements come together beautifully in the glass. Hints of passion fruit and pineapple linger on the finish. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2013. This is a solid set of wines from Planeta, one of Sicily's better-known estates. As good as the best of these wines can be, they are also very safe. It would be nice to see Planeta take some more chances and make wines with a little more ambition. Cometa is a fantastic expression of Fiano from Sicily that reaches high marks in terms of purity, intensity and persistency. The wine is thick and smooth on the palate and imparts lasting flavors of stone fruit, honeydew melon and almond blossom. ——M.L.(3/1/2011)—— 91
