The nose of the 2009 Clos Fontá screamed slate and Priorat. This powerful wine was born in 1998 as a blend of Cari?ena, Garnacha Peluda and Garnacha País (different strains of Garnacha) selected from their best estate vineyards and fermented in small oak vats by plot. After malo the wines are blended and put in 225- and 1,500-liter oak vats to mature for some 14 months. Wet slate, ripe plums, spices and peat aromas dominate the nose. The palate is full-bodied and ripe, true to place and vintage, a powerful red for the long haul that is still in need of some more time in bottle and/or powerful meat dishes. I'd still wait a bit more. 7,928 bottles were filled.
