The 1990 red Cru de Coudoulet, made from a vineyard adjacent to that of Beaucastel, but officially outside of the delimited area for Chateauneuf du Pape, is an excellent wine. It offers a big, leathery, beefy, peppery, violet and cassis-scented nose, deep, supple, heady flavors, soft tannins, and low acidity. It exhibits the tell-tale spice and fragrance of the so-called "Brett" yeast so readers who do not like animal smells in their wine will no doubt find this offering objectionable. Given how well Coudoulet ages, I would expect the 1990 to continue to drink well for the next 12-15 years. Importer: Vineyard Brands, Chester, VT.
