Tasted at the La Romanée vertical at Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair. The 2003 La Romanée Grand Cru bottled by Bouchard Père & Fils has a bright ruby colour. The bouquet is attractive for such a warm vintage having retained plenty of freshness. Mulberry mixed with leather and later blackcurrant pastille that are nicely defined. The palate is medium-bodied with rounded, quite soft tannin, but there is a grittiness and slight dryness that surfaces toward the second half. It is a commendable expression on the finish and the spicy, black pepper finish is enticing, but I maintain that the mineralité and tension was erased by the heat of that summer. Tasted June 2015.
