I am not a great Merlot fan, but his 2003 Merlot Home Ranch (95% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc aged 17 months in 100% new French oak) is gorgeous. Fully mature, but not likely to fall apart anytime soon, it exhibits seductive notes of mocha, coffee and berry fruit, loamy minerality, hints of black currants and black cherries and a luscious, medium to full-bodied, opulent finish. Enjoy it over the next 5-7 years.
The longtime, bigger-than-life winemaker at Beringer, Ed Sbragia, now produces wines under his own label. All four of his 2003s admirably demonstrate his obvious talent.
