The 2007 Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Classico Superiore Balciana is made in an opulent, late-harvest style that nevertheless captures plenty of varietal character, albeit in a rich, sensual style. Super-ripe peaches, flowers, sweet herbs, orange peel, crushed rocks and minerals are just some of the notes this superb wine hits. This is truly a remarkable, first-class white that readers will not want to miss. Although the wine is drinking beautifully today, I have little doubt it has plenty of stuffing to age gracefully for at least several years. This is one of the finest whites I tasted this year from Italy. Simply put, it is not to be missed. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2017.
These whites from Sartarelli were among the most thrilling, complete wines I tasted this year. The two entry-level Verdicchios also happen to be two of the best values in Italy for whites that offer noble class and pedigree at what are very fair prices.
