The 2007 Barolo is a gorgeous, fleshy wine. Sweet red cherries, crushed and dried flowers, tobacco and licorice meld together seamlessly in this terrific entry-level bottling. The Barolo shows lovely mid-palate pliancy and terrific balance in an approachable style best suited to near-term drinking. The classic profile of tar and roses lingers on the finish. It is a fabulous effort at this level. Readers who want to understand the essence of Nebbiolo and Barolo without spending a fortune may want to start here. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2022.
This is a solid set of new releases from Francesco Rinaldi. I would be hard pressed to name another winery that has made more significant improvements in the overall quality of the wines than Francesco Rinaldi. The style remains rigorously traditional, but the wines are far more elegant than they were just a few years ago. The 2007 Baroli are quite typical for the year.
