Ripe red cherries are found in the nose of the medium to dark ruby-colored 2001 Vosne-Romanee Les Suchots. Light to medium-bodied, it offers kirsch, black cherry, and raspberry fruit in its detailed, expressive personality. It reveals a tannic edge in the finish but has enough depth of fruit to sustain that characteristic in the near term. Drink it over the next 4-5 years.
The talented, young Mounir Saouma, this negociant’s founder, director, and winemaker, stated that 2001 was a good but not great year for both whites and reds. “The disaster some people speak of is simply wrong, yet those who say this is one of the great years may have been smoking something strange... The important thing going into harvest was for producers to realize that 10% of their grapes had rot and another 10% were unripe.
