Always the most massive and one of the two most structured of Racquillet’s reds, his 2005 Mercurey Les Naugues offers scents and flavors of red cherry, cinnamon, rose wood, wood smoke, and beef marrow. Palpably dense on the palate, it finishes with real grip and a wonderfully deep sweetness of pit fruits and marrow, and deserves at least 3-5 years in the cellar. Raquillet went up to 40% new oak here (and 50% on the Les Veleys) without its being evident.
