Perhaps the biggest disappointment from unbottled wine to finished product is the 2004 Chateauneuf du Pape Vin di Felibre. This looked to be outstanding last year when I tasted it, but the wine now seems pleasant, one-dimensional, spicy, but lacking concentration and depth. It reveals notes of tapenade, dried herbs, sweet cherries, and hints of strawberry and earth, but finishes with astringent tannin, and dries out in the mouth. This is an estate making more Pinot Noir-like Chateauneuf du Papes based on elegance and immediate gratification rather some of the more weighty/tannic/muscular examples. I thought the 2004s from bottle were less impressive than the samples shown last year and, given their polished look, I couldn’t help but think that perhaps over-aggressive fining or filtration could have robbed them of the texture and concentration they possessed 12 months ago.Importer: Rhone Valley Importing, Wytheville, VA; tel.
