The last of the Chardonnays, the 2014 Chardonnay Top Cream comes from a single block in the Babcock Estate Vineyard and was fermented and aged in 50% new French oak. Offering lots of ripe peach and orchard fruits, brioche and toasted bread, this medium-bodied, rich, textured and layered beauty stays lively and fresh on the palate, has a great texture and a clean, classy finish. It’s certainly a more rounded, supple and textured wine than the 2014 Chardonnay The Limit and I suspect it’s best drunk over the coming 4-5 years. Note, the name comes from the vineyard’s three- to four-foot layer of grayish white topsoil where the vines are planted.
