Here's a dark and intense red wine from the deep south of Italy. The 2016 Aglianico del Vulture Gudarrà is an inky black and impenetrable expression with very linear aromas of black fruit, tar and campfire ash. Those aromas are delivered with immediate and sharply contained pulses that hit the palate in steady succession. Despite all that massive aromatic potential, the mouthfeel is more compact and even a bit shorter on the finish than you might expect. This is a good thing, because any more richness would be too much. Some 20,000 bottles were made.

You get terrific value with this red wine from Southern Italy. The fruit in this warm vintage comes together with precision and balanced intensity. The 2015 Aglianico del Vulture Gudarrà is a generous and opulent expression with a thick layer of black fruit. In addition, you get delicate and territorial notes of campfire ash and exotic spice. This is a contemporary expression from a deeply traditional wine region. On the finish, you get touches of black olive and grilled herb. Some 20,000 bottles were produced.

This is medium-bodied and grippy, featuring fresh acidity layered with a creamy mix of crushed blackberry flavors and hints of dark chocolate, orange zest, leather and balsamic. This is one of Bisceglia's most successful lines of wines. However, the 2014 Aglianico del Vulture Gudarrà is less convincing than past editions. On the plus side, the wine is brimming with a level of generosity and softness that is rare to see in the very tannic and astringent Aglianico grape. But there is a noticeable touch of volatile acidity (with bruised apple aromas) that take away from the overall purity and integrity. There's a lot of sour fruit on the close. For less than double the price, I recommend the 2008 Riserva version of this wine instead.
