The Viura white 2017 Onomástica Blanco Reserva was produced with grapes from 30+-year-old vines from their El Estanque estate in Haro. After 12 hours of skin contact, the must started fermenting in stainless steel and finished in new and second use barrels, where the wine matured for 24 months with lees and batonnage during the first months. It has a Burgundian feeling to it, white and yellow peach, fine spices and noble woods. The palate reveals terrific balance, moderate alcohol, a medium body and a serious, somewhat chalky mouthfeel. It has tasty, focused and clean flavors. This should develop nicely in bottle. 1,700 bottles were filled in 2019.

The top white I tasted was the 2014 Onomástica Blanco Reserva, one of the first white reservas to be produced again. It's pure Viura/Macabeo, which started fermenting in stainless steel and finished in barrique, where the wine matured for 24 months. They feel it is too young and were reluctant to show it to me. It has young aromas of yellow fruit and very nicely integrated oak. The palate is very tasty with clean, focused flavors and good freshness. I believe this will develop nicely in bottle. 2,100 bottles were filled in 2017.

I found the 2012 Onomástica Blanco Reserva quite young and fruit driven for a Viura that has aged in new and used French and American oak barrels for two years. There were some citric and even exotic fruit notes. With time and air, there were more yeasty aromas and it seemed to get more focused. The palate was lighter than I expected, with good acidity, but could do with a little more mid-palate. 2,973 bottles produced.

The white 2011 Onomástica Blanco Reserva is pure Viura that finishes its fermentation in oak barrels where the wine matured for two years in contact with the lees and periodic battonage in the first few months. It still feels quite young and fresh with well-integrated oak aromas and a bay leaf balsamic note intermixed with the white fruit and fennel aromas but whit an unusual oxidative whiff. The palate is quite fresh with the chalky minerality sticking to your teeth and less marked by the oak than previous vintages. It feel somehow more banal. A nice, fresh, white Rioja, lacking the complexity of a Reserva. 1,233 bottles.

The 2009 Onomastica Blanco Reserva is one of the few white Reservas produced, going back to the style of yesteryear, white wines built to last that show quite oaky in their youth, displaying a bright golden color and notes of smoke and vanilla under which there is a layer of ripe yellow fruit, hints of orange rind and chalky minerality. The palate is intense, with some toffee and lactic flavors, yellow plums and a long finish, where the toast notes from the barrels make a comeback. This is not a wine for everybody, as it is marked by a very specific style. It will be interesting to follow its evolution. Drink 2014-2020. This historical name from Haro has been owned by the Vivanco family since 2002 and they are making great efforts to revive the name and improve the quality of the wines. They are on the right path.
