The outstanding 2010 Cotes du Rhone-Villages Cairanne l’Exigence reveals an even deeper opaque ruby/purple color as well as lots of black currant, incense, strawberry, cherry, Christmas fruitcake and earthy soil undertones. This full-bodied, pure, impressively textured Cairanne is best consumed in its first 5-6 years of life. As I wrote last year, Domaine Boisson, not to be confused with the Domaine de Boissan, is owned by two brothers, Alain, who oversees the Cros de Romet property and Bruno, who is in charge of the Domaine Boisson cuvees. One of the finest estates in Cairanne, I have enjoyed these wines for a number of years. Like their 2007s and 2009s, the 2010s are superb efforts. Moreover, prices are ridiculously fair for such quality. A wine that needs another year or so of bottle age is the 2009 Cairanne l’Exigence. The least evolved and most backward of these offerings, it displays aromas of new saddle leather, earthy/underbrush, black currants and black cherries. This structured, masculine, full-bodied wine should evolve for a decade, but some patience will be required. The outstanding 2008 Cotes du Rhone-Villages Cairanne l’Exigence is an elegant, exuberant effort offering a deep ruby/purple color along with sweet notes of black raspberries, blackberries, new saddle leather, damp earth, and graphite. Rich and round, it should drink well for 3-4 years. Domaine Boisson, which produced some outstanding bargains in 2007, has done exceptionally well in 2008, a much more difficult vintage. Drink this prodigious Cairanne over the next 7-10 years. Slightly richer, fuller, and meatier is the 2006 Cairanne L’Exigence, which is deep, medium to full-bodied, with beautifully sweet strawberry and black cherry fruit intermixed with licorice, crushed Provencal herbs, and meat juices.
