The 2019 Chateauneuf du Pape Terre d'Abel—a unique blend of 67% Mourvèdre, 22% Syrah and 11% Grenache, all aged in new barriques—turns up the intensity over the regular cuvée, being considerably darker in hue. Hints of scorched wood mark the nose, joined by caramelized plum notes. Full-bodied and concentrated, this wine is still richly tannic, but it finishes long and velvety, providing more confidence that this wine will come around given time in the cellar.
