Moving deeper into the range of residual sweetness, the 2004 Deidesheimer Kalkofen Riesling Spatlese exhibits an aroma of tropical fruits, ginger and chocolate that is not at all atypical for Rieslings from this site (which translates as “l(fā)ime kiln”). Rather vintage-typical Scheurebe-like suggestions of pink grapefruit and mint add to the complexity of the bouquet. The palate displays opulent richness of fruit, a glossy texture, and chocolate and toasted nut undertones and the finish is impressively long if at present rather dominated by its sheer sweetness.
