Here's an informal wine to drink with your favorite home-cooked chicken recipe. The Fratelli Revello 2017 Langhe Nebbiolo is a smooth and silky interpretation with a steady flow of uninterrupted berry, cassis, almond and licorice. The wine is tonic and bright, and it sports the kind of easy informality that will prompt you to drink a glass or two as you hang around the kitchen and wait for the chicken to simmer in the pot or roast in the oven. Ironically, this cool 2016 vintage shows extra ripeness.

Surprisingly fragrant and floral, the 2016 Langhe Nebbiolo is redolent of rose hip, dried lavender bud and ripe strawberry. Those floral nuances seem to be directly linked to the ripeness of the wine, which is evident despite the relatively cool nature of this vintage. In fact, that ripeness tends to erase the natural complexities of this mighty grape. This is a simple, easy-drinking red (with 8,000 bottles made) available at an attractive price point.

The 2012 Langhe Nebbiolo is a stripped down and simple version of this varietal with bright fruit and toasted spice on prime display. The wine ages in barrique for one year to add suppleness and richness to its textural consistency. The 2012 vintage was a good one in the Langhe and many producers have understandably selected their best fruit for their Barolo and Barbaresco production.

The 2009 Langhe Nebbiolo emerges from the glass with sweet red cherries, mint and flowers. It shows gorgeous depth with firm, but not totally inaccessible tannins at this stage, and great overall balance. If given a little air the wine will drink beautifully at the dinner table. This is a fabulous showing from the Revello brothers. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2017. Brothers Carlo and Enzo Revello embody the finest values of Piedmont’s artisan culture. The 2008 Langhe Nebbiolo reveals gorgeous richness in its dried cherries, herbs, flowers and spices. This is a fairly rich Nebbiolo for La Morra, but the wine’s overall sense of balance is simply terrific. This is a fabulous entry-level Nebbiolo. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2015.
