The 2009 Barbera d’Alba offers terrific varietal delineation and character in a vibrant, fruit-driven style best suited to near term drinking. As delicious as this is, some rustic elements remain – particularly in the aromatics – that I often find in this entry-level bottling. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2012. Hilberg-Pasquero is one of my favorite wineries in Roero. The wines are made with a natural, non-interventionalist approach in both the vineyards and cellar. The 2008 Barbera d’Alba offers good intensity in its dark fruit if not quite the aromatic finesse and elegance of the best vintages. This bottle was a touch reduced and needed some air to clean up. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2011. The small Roero estate of Annette Hilberg and Michele Pasquero is one of my favorite sources for pure, hand-crafted wines that highlight the unique qualities of this terroir. The 2007 Barbera d’Alba is a joyous wine bursting with perfume-laced ripe red fruit. Drink this fresh, engaging Barbera over the next year or two. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2010. I can’t say enough good things about the wines of Hilberg-Pasquero, a small estate located in the Roero. The 2006 Barbera d’Alba is an accessible, vinous wine bursting with blueberries, blackberries, tar and licorice. This plump, juicy Barbera is best enjoyed over the next few years. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2009.Hilberg-Pasquero is one of my favorite Piedmont producers, especially for Barbera. Working out of a tiny cellar in the town of Priocca in Roero Michele Pasquero and Annette Hilberg make wines with an emphasis on natural farming of the vineyards and a stripped-down, non interventionalist approach in the cellar.
