This is an attractive set of wines from Longboard Vineyards, led by their brilliant 2007 Syrah Dakine Vineyard. Its black raspberry flavors, with hints of blueberry, forest floor, and loamy, earthy notes, are decidedly cool-climate characteristics of Syrah. The sweet tannins, full-bodied richness, and impressive texture and purity all characterize a well-made, top-class Syrah that should drink nicely for 7-8 years. Tel. Firmed up with a little Zinfandel, Malbec, Petite Sirah, Carignane and Grenache, this full-bodied red wine is delicious and complex. Bone dry, its bright acidity and freshly crushed pepper flavors highlight ripe cherry, raspberry, teriyaki beef and toast flavors. Should age well for the midterm.——S.H.(5/1/2011)—— 90

Far more elegant, restrained, and less oaky is the 2006 Syrah Dakine Vineyard. This is not quite at the level of the 2007, but similar characteristics are evident – blueberries, black raspberries, damp earth, forest floor, and a floral note in a restrained, elegant overall style, with medium body and ripe tannins. Most California Syrahs aren’t ageworthy, but this one is. It’s got a rich core of blackberries, mulberries, currants, cola, pepper and anise, but it’s also quite tannic, with an astringency that lasts through the finish. The 2005 vintage was kind to this wine, grown in the warmer, northerly Middle Reach section of the valley. While lacking the depth of the 2002 and 2003, it shows flavorful black currants, cherries and root beer, with a peppery finish. The tannins are rich and fine.
