Always solid (and always selling for a song), the 2013 Costieres de Nimes Cuvee Tradition is a classic blend of 55% Roussanne, 30% Marsanne and 15% Viognier. Aged all in tank, it offers pretty notes of white peach, citrus blossom and hints of minerality to go with a forward, delicious, easy-drinking style. It’s a great mid-week drinker to enjoy over the coming year or two.

Vibrantly clear and raspberry in color, the 2012 Mas Carlot Costieres-de-Nimes Cuvee Tradition Rose (50% Grenache, 40% Syrah and 10% Mourvedre) delivers loads of wild strawberry, cherry, flowers and hints of minerality in a medium-bodied, classically dry, yet textured and rich package. Not quite to the Tavel level of richness, this beautifully fresh, elegant rose represents and awesome value and will shine for 6-12 months. Drink now-2013. My favorite is actually the 2011 Mas Carlot Costieres de Nimes Cuvee Tradition (rose), which is largely sold out, but what a wonderful wine, made from Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre. Light salmon in color with an orange hue, the wine is rich, medium-bodied and loaded with flavor. It is a sleeper of the vintage for roses. One of my favorite estates from the Costieres de Nimes is Mas Carlot. The red wines in 2011 are not as strong as what was achieved in 2009 and 2010, but they are still well-made. Mas Carlot does an admirable job with roses, and although this wine is probably sold out (as it should be), the 2010 Rose Tradition is a blend of 60% Grenache, 30% Syrah and 10% Mourvedre. What makes it one of the better roses is its display of minerality as well as dry, intense flavors with good grip, something most roses tend to lack. It was tightly knit when I saw it, since it had probably just been bottled, but displays good roundness, structure and depth.
