The 2008 VINHA CONCHAS red, a value priced entrant, is a blend of Tinta Roriz (58.3%, according to the detailed label), Touriga Nacional (33.5%) and Trincadeira (8.2%). It comes in at just 12.5% alcohol. What it doesn’t have is not particularly noteworthy in its price range. Of course, there is not a lot of mid-palate concentration, and it is grapey and fruit forward. That said, it has some structure and focus, very much seeming like real wine. It is very flavorful and charming, if straightforward, likely to show its best young, even if it holds. It is rather bright, perhaps to a fault. It is hard to score a wine like this higher, but if encountered young, it will provide some easy drinking fun and is worth a look in this price range. Drink now-2013. I had a nice little vertical of the Touriga Nacional at the winery this Summer. They probably showed best in the 3-6 year age range, but the older wines were all still alive and drinking nicely going back to the first poured, the 1997. Considering the price point here—up and down the lineup, the prices are right for generally pleasant wines—that is a pretty respectable performance. They deliver some bang for the buck.Importer: Tri-Vin Imports, Mt. Vernon, NY; tel. (914) 664-3155.
