The estate’s answer to the great blended wines of coastal Tuscany, the 2011 Rocca di Montemassi (45% Petit Verdot, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Syrah and 15% Merlot) opens with an inky, dark color and ripe aromas of blackberry pie, dried prune, leather, tobacco, Christmas spice and rum cake. There’s a jammy element at the back. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2022. Rocca di Montemassi is the Maremma estate of the Zonin Group. The most impressive is the 2010 Rocca di Montemassi. The blend is a little different here: 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Syrah, 15% Merlot and the rest is Petit Verdot. The excellent vintage renders a feeling of balance and finesse. The Zonin family has been tinkering with the blending proportions for a few years.
