Similarly-styled, but more expensive is the 2012 Merlot State and Rush. Aromas of black cherries, blackcurrants, mocha and coffee beans are followed by a wine with a round, elegant, moderately endowed mouthfeel, and a soft finish. It is best consumed over the next 4-5 years.

The 2005 Merlot has a slightly more saturated dark ruby/purple-tinged color than the 2004, notes of red and black currants, white chocolate, good acidity, and firm tannin. It should last longer than the 2004. Tel. 707-473-2992

The 2004 Merlot Dry Creek exhibiting notes of white chocolate, damp earth, and rich cherry and berry fruit. Dark ruby/purple, medium-bodied, with about 5% Cabernet Franc in the blend, this is well-made and elegantly styled. It should drink well for 7-10 years. Tel. 707-473-2992

The 2003 Merlot Dry Creek is an earthy, spicy wine displaying attractive berry fruit, cherries, and currants. It is best drunk over the next 4-5 years. With all these wines, it must seem like Ed Sbragia must have left Beringer to start his own operation, but he’s still at Beringer, and they would be smart to keep him there given his undeniable talents. He’s been a fixture at Beringer for decades, and it speaks highly of the Beringer brain trust to allow him the flexibility to have his own label.
