This is a blend of Pinot Bianco, Friulano (named Tocai Friulano here, using the variety's older name) and Riesling Renano. The Scubla 2018 Friuli Colli Orientali Pomédes Bianco is a nicely textured mid-weight white that is grounded by peach, apple and poached pear. The bouquet reveals a very open and accessible personality with some nutty or oxidized aromas that add to the weight and the richness of the mouthfeel. Some 5,000 bottles were released. Ironically, I found the 2017 vintage to be a little fresher than this edition.

A release of about 5,000 bottles, this Scubla 2017 Friuli Colli Orientali Pomédes Bianco (a blend of Pinot Bianco, Friulano and Riesling Renano) opens to ripe fruit and warm notes of toasted almond or nut. The fruit is dense and soft with apricot, peach, quince and preserved lemon. The wine works well in the mouth thanks to the slightly richer, almost waxy nature of its texture.

The 2016 Friuli Colli Orientali Pomédes Bianco is a well-achieved blend of 60% Pinot Bianco, 30% Friulano and 10% Riesling. The wine finds great balance between its more aromatic components and the parts that add more textural richness and depth. The fruit is fermented in oak and later aged in steel vats for seven months with frequent stirring of the lees. Stone fruit, melon and poached pear rise from the bouquet with a very subtle touch of smoky mineral that might come from the Friulano grape or maybe from the Riesling. Some 4,000 bottles were made.

The 2013 Friuli Colli Orientali Pomédes is a successful blend of Pinot Bianco, Tocai Friulano (now called Friulano) and Riesling Renano. This is a sharply defined white blend with a pretty array of aromatic elements that range from crushed mineral to citrus to almond blossom. The wine is very clean and forthcoming in approach and it offers the right level of crisp acidity to feel energetic, but not too sharp.

The 2006 Pomedes Bianco is a gorgeous, pure white. This cuvee of 65% Pinot Bianco, 25% Friulano and 10% Riesling is initially rather focused, but then blossoms beautifully on the mid-palate with well-articulated white peaches, smoke, licorice, mint and spices. Subtle notes of toasted oak make an appearance but they are nicely woven into the wine’s fabric. This is one of the more interesting wines I tasted from Friuli this year.
