The brilliant 2013 Heredad de Candela is a killer wine; it is 100% Mourvèdre from vines planted 1925-1935 and aged 12 months in 500-liter French oak puncheons. This is gorgeously fragrant with notes of white flowers, licorice, blueberry and blackberry fruit, and chalk dust. This dense purple wine hits the palate with a full-bodied, layered skyscraper-like mouthfeel -- a big, rich, muscular wine, but exceptionally well balanced with plenty of sweet tannin. At $25 per bottle, it tastes more like wine that sells for two or three times the price. Drink now through 2020, or even longer.

The most expensive wine is the outstanding 2012 Heredad de Candela, a 100% Mourvèdre from vines planted between 1925 and 1935 at an elevation just over 2,300 feet. Aged nine months in 500-liter French oak barrels, 1,500 cases were produced. The wine is dense and medium to full-bodied with elegant blueberry and blackberry fruit, a hint of chalky minerality, and a fleshy, intense texture. Drink it over the next 3-4 years.

The 2011 Heredad Candela is produced from 75- to 85-year-old Monastrell vines, which start fermentation in open vats and finish it in barriques, where it undergoes malolactic fermentation and aging for 10 months. The nose shows ripe blueberries, with some rusticity (tree bark) a touch of black olives and a sweet sensation that reminds me of the fresh grapes. The palate shows the concentration of the old vines; the wood and alcohol are well-integrated, it has good structure and acidity with fine-grained tannins. It shows the Mediterranean character while keeping the freshness. 30,000 bottles were produced. Drink 2013-2017. Senorio de Barahonda was created in 1924, but it was not until the 1990s that they start bottling Yecla wines. Their vineyards cover 840 acres in and around the town of Yecla in Murcia and include some of the oldest Monastrell plantings in Spain.
