Excellent wines from Tardieu-Laurent at the low end include such bargains as the 2009 Bastide de Rhodares, a 60% Grenache and 40% Syrah blend from the Cotes du Luberon. (It actually comes from the hillsides near one of my favorite restaurants in France, La Freniere in Lourmarin.) Dense ruby/purple, with loads of raspberry and black currant fruit, the wine possesses serious concentration and medium body in a silky, supple style. The 2007 Cotes du Luberon Bastide de Rhodares is a blend of equal parts Grenache and Syrah that was aged in old wood. It exhibits a deep ruby/purple color along with notes of spring flowers, red and black fruits, damp earth, and spice, super fruit, and a luscious texture. Consume it over the next 4-5 years. This wine is a super bargain. This partial look at the Tardieu-Laurent portfolio concentrates on the value-priced offerings from the southern Rhone.
