The 2007 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico is a big, big wine. Plums, mocha, chocolate, spices, new leather and flowers are some of the notes that emerge from this fleshy, large-scaled Amarone. This is a fairly obvious, fruit-driven Amarone, but it works. Firm yet well-balanced tannins frame the insistent finish. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2022. The 2006 Amarone della Valpolicella is fabulous. Dark cherries, plums, menthol, leather and licorice flow effortlessly from this rich, round Amarone. This shows marvelous richness and density while avoiding heaviness in a moderately concentrated style for Amarone. Bitter chocolate and mocha linger on the intense yet beautifully crafted finish. The 2005 Amarone della Valpolicella is a very pretty, well-balanced offering redolent of dark cherries, flowers, black berries, grilled herbs and leather. A long, refined finish rounds out this accessible Amarone. The aromas and flavors are already slightly forward, suggesting this medium-bodied Amarone is best enjoyed within the next few years. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2015. Tedeschi seems to struggle achieving a consistent level of quality across all of their offerings. I found the simpler wines better balanced than the more important bottles.
