The 2008 Castello delle Femmine is an entry-level red made from Pallagrello Nero and Casavecchia, two ancient Campanian varieties. Worn-in leather, licorice, spices and dark fruit are some of the notes that emerge in the glass. This is naturally a touch more forward than the estate’s other 2008 reds and it should be enjoyed earlier rather than later. Still, the balance, length and refinement of the tannins are all impeccable. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2015.
The richness of Campanian oenology is still being discovered. These superb new releases from Terre del Principe are great starting points for readers who want to discover the virtues of Pallagrello Bianco, Pallagrello Nero and Casavecchia, all indigenous, native varieties that proprietor Peppe Mancini helped revive from near obscurity.
