The 2015 Weisser Burgunder Reserve will be kept on the full lees (in three Halbstück vats of 600 liters) until the 2016 harvest and will be aged on the fine lees until spring 2017. There was no malolactic and no battonage since January, though: "We want to show the chalky origin and a more Burgundian style to separate the Pinot Blanc Reserve from Riesling GGs, but we do not want fatness," Wittmann explains. The grapes are sourced in the Steingrube, which is a site next to the Morstein. It is a very large site, but very heterogeneous soils. This wine comes from higher plots in calcareous soils (20% active chalk). The nose is very different compared to the regular Pinot Blanc; it shows ripe yellow fruit with tropical flavors intermixed with a certain sweetness and creaminess from the sur-lie aging in the slightly toasted barrels. A very attractive nose that is clear, deep and aromatic. Full-bodied, round and intense on the palate, this dense and complex, perfectly balanced Pinot reveals a long, intense finish with lingering salty flavors. It is highly elegant and fresh, perfectly structured and reveals great tension.
