Battely’s French-styled offerings include the stunning 2003 Sojourn, a blend of 60% Shiraz and 40% Durif from 6-year-old vines (shockingly young for the quality of this wine). Although the alcohol is nearly off the charts, this is a relatively elegant red from a cool climate region not far from one of Australia’s top ski areas. Its inky/purple color is followed by a fabulous perfume of white flowers interwoven with blueberry liqueur, crushed rock, creosote, and graphite aromas. There is superb fruit intensity, fine acidity, a full-bodied, layered palate, and a finish that lasts nearly 60 seconds. This amazing, world-class wine possesses singular characteristics. Anticipated maturity: 2006-2020.Importer: Dan Philips, The Grateful Palate, Oxnard, CA; tel. (888) 472-5283
