The super-concentrated, tannic 1988 Cote Rotie is more closed than the 1989, but its impressive extraction of fruit is admirable. The nose offers aromas of smoked meats, black fruits, and herbs. In the mouth, it is full-bodied, with terrific concentration, as well as a long, powerful finish. Drink it between 1995-2008.
Now that the son, Gilbert, is making the wines, there has been a positive progression in quality. The old, rustic style of Cote Rotie has been replaced by wines with freshness, more concentration, and improved aging potential.
