Now that the son, Gilbert, is making the wines, there has been a positive progression in quality. The old, rustic style of Cote Rotie has been replaced by wines with freshness, more concentration, and improved aging potential. The 1989 Cote Rotie is one of the finest efforts of the vintage. The wine exhibits a healthy dark ruby/purple color, as well as a sweet nose of bacon fat, black-raspberries, earth, and flowers. In the mouth, it is expansive. The vanillin component suggests aging in toasty new oak. There is medium to full body, excellent purity and balance, and a moderately tannic, generous finish. Drink it over the next 10-12 years.
