A knockout, rich and full-flavored white, Usseglio’s 2012 Chateauneuf-du-Pape Roussanne Pur is comprised of 100% Roussanne that was fermented and aged in 100% new French oak. Going completely through malolactic fermentation, it offers deep, layered aromas of grilled peaches, honeycomb, toasted bread, vanilla custard and white flowers. This flows to a full-bodied white that has building richness, beautiful purity and a clean, focused finish. Count me a fan. This beauty deserves a classy meal. It should evolve gracefully, but I’d lean towards drinking bottles over the coming couple of years. Drink now-2016.
Covering 45 acres (37 in red and the rest planted to white varieties) spread throughout Chateauneuf du Pape, this top-notch estate has been run by Raymond Usseglio’s son, Stephane, since 2004, with consulting help from Xavier Vignon. These wines are consistently outstanding and warrant serious attention.
