The 1989 Gigondas, which is the vintage now appearing in the marketplace, is superb. It is a blockbuster Gigondas, with an opaque dark ruby/purple color, a huge nose of roasted meats, black-raspberries, oriental spices, herbs, and pepper. In the mouth, there is sensational concentration, a massive, full-bodied, unctuous texture, adequate acidity to provide grip and delineation, and a whoppingly long, rich finish. Drinkable now, it should hold and perhaps improve for another 12-14 years. The price makes it a steal.
