The 1988 Gigondas, is perhaps the most classic of these wines. There is more structure and tannin, but not quite the opulence of fruit that both the 1989 and 1990 possess. It is a deep, rich wine, with a more reticent nose which, with coaxing, gives up aromas of peppery black fruit, herbs, and truffles. In the mouth, it is full-bodied, with more noticeable tannin and better acidity than either the 1989 or 1990. It, too, should drink well for up to a decade.
