When I did my original tastings of the 1974s, the three wines that stood out in that mediocre vintage were Latour, Trotanoy, and La Mission-Haut-Brion. The 1974 is still very alive, and has at least another 7-10 years of aging potential. It remains a tougher, more sinewy style of La Mission-Haut-Brion, but exhibits an excellent deep, dark garnet color, a big, mineral-scented, smoky, earthy, spicy bouquet, medium to full body, very hard tannins, and very good flavor depth, particularly for a 1974. No doubt the deep guaunzian gravel and subsoil of La Mission's vineyard resulted in this wine's turning out to be one of the successes of this rain-soaked vintage. Anticipated maturity: Now. Last tasted, 3/91.
