A new wine from Marco Caprai, the 2006 Montefalco Sagrantino Spinning Beauty is a dark, brooding and powerful beast that is ripe with a deep sense of inner angst and determination. It also shows enormous grace and poise. That said, great work has been achieved to pull back and rein in Sagrantino's astringent tannins. The bouquet offers seemingly infinite layers of dark fruit, prune, spice and bitter chocolate. I had the fortune of drinking this wine with a thick cut of bistecca alla fiorentina, and the painting was perfect. Spinning Beauty needs a few more years of cellar aging.
