The 2008 Tres Patas is a blend of 80% Garnacha and 20% Syrah from 85-year-old vines, and it sees 12 months in new and used French oak. It has a slightly subdued, sandalwood-tinged bouquet that is nicely defined but would probably benefit from some decanting. The palate is well-balanced, with crisp raspberry and red currant fruit, well-integrated oak and a dense, compact but very well-focused, brambly finish. This is a well-crafted, astutely made Mentrida red. Drink 2014-2018.
Now here is a challenger to Jimenez-Landi’s crown but, hey, it is great to see two Mentrida growers giving the region such a good name. It was formed in 2004 by Alfonso Chacon y Belarmino Fernandez when they began acquiring parcels of Garnacha on unique terroirs. Their wines come highly recommended: natural, full of character and charm, Mentrida wines you want to contemplate and savor.
