The Castelvecchio 2017 Chianti Colli Fiorentini Riserva Vigna la Quercia is 90% Sangiovese blended with a carefully measured 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. It ages in a combination of new and neutral oak. The La Quercia vineyard measures 1.8 hectares and has medium-thick soils with plenty of rocks mixed in for good drainage. This Riserva opens to a dark and rich bouquet with plum, cherry, tar, spice and campfire ash. The wine shows medium texture and dry tannins, backed by some hot-vintage astringency. You'll want to pair this wine with foods that have a fatty ingredient, such as bacon or guanciale, to help break down some of that textural richness. A mere 5,270 bottles were made.
