Unquestionably, Pine Ridge is making far richer, more interesting, and more alluringly textured and complete wines today than they were in the mid-eighties. For whatever reason, the 1986 Cabernet Sauvignon Andrus Reserve exhibits a musty, woody nose, and some aromas of caramel and tar. High acidity dominates the meager flavors, giving the wine a narrowly focused, angular toughness on the palate. This tightly strung, tannic, acidic, somewhat emaciated wine is not aging well. Although it will last for 20 more years, it will not provide much pleasure. The tasting notes for this section are from two single blind tastings, one conducted in May, 1996, in California, and the other in June, 1996, in Baltimore.
