The 1988, 1990, and 1991 Old Patch Reds all possess a superb southern Rhone-like nose of oriental spices, super-ripe red and black fruits, pepper, and new saddle leather. There is gorgeous richness, an expansive, full-bodied, chewy lusciousness, as well as considerable depth, focus, and length. It is hard to pick a favorite as they are relatively similar. The 1991 is slightly richer and deeper.
Perhaps the most amazing red wine made in California is Trentadue's proprietary red wine called Old Patch Red. It is a field blend of Carignane, Petite-Sirah, Zinfandel, and Alicante from vines planted in the 19th century. In 1993, the average age of these vines was 107 years. It should be apparent that this winery is making a bevy of terrific red wines at bargain basement prices. Their wines all sell for between $6-$12 a bottle. Given their quality/price rapport, these wines will not linger on retailers' shelves.
